Ming’s at Midtown
Mings is an Asian fusion restaurant located in midtown, right outside of the River Walk. Mostly known for their variety of steamed buns, they feature a steamed bun of the month. As of September 2026, the featured bun was a Monte Cristo inspired bun. We’ll get into that later!

One thing I immediately found interesting was Ming’s fountain drinks. They use a brand called ‘Stubborn Soda’ which has no artificial sweeteners, no high fructose corn syrup and most importantly (to me) it’s dye free! I chose the agave vanilla cream soda. I’m not a huge soda drinker, but I craved cream soda so badly when I was pregnant with my boy. My girl had the classic root beer and she loved it!

We started with an order of Ming’s Wings, which immediately became the boy’s dish of choice. They were crispy, which I appreciate, however, they were quite underwhelming compared to Wayne’s Wings and Smash’d. The wings weren’t coated in anything except sesame seeds. We did order the regular wings, so I’m unsure if the spicy wings are coated in a sauce or not. Ranch is included though!

I ordered two different steamed buns. The Monte Cristo, which is the bun of the month, and the smoked pork belly bun. The pork belly bun was probably the best dish I ate, while the Monte Cristo bun was easily the worst. It’s actually quite humorous how bad the bun of the month was— Papa actually spit it out. After his reaction to the Monte Cristo bun, I gatekept the pork belly bun. The pork belly was tender and juicy, while the carrots and cucumbers were crispy and fresh.
Papa ordered the teriyaki crispy chicken rice bowl. Sesame chicken, rice, slaw, broccoli and a fried egg drizzled in a sweet teriyaki glaze. I actually thought the chicken was good, although Papa wasn’t too excited about it.

I ordered the bulgogi rice bowl. Beef, slaw, kimchi, jalapeño, and a fried egg drizzled with sriracha mayo. The dish was spicier than I expected, but not too spicy to enjoy. I’m glad I got to taste kimchi— I don’t think I’ve tried kimchi since living in Japan. Previously, I wasn’t a fan. Now? I think I love it! The bulgogi was tender and flavorful. If we ever went back to Ming’s, which I don’t think we will, I’d definitely order the bulgogi rice bowl again!

The girl ordered the kid’s noodle soup. This dish includes rice noodles with broccoli in chicken broth. Honestly, this dish tasted like nothing. The broth was severely lacking in flavor. I was hoping for some ginger, garlic, hell, even green onion and got nothing. But the girl enjoyed it, which made me proud. She was so excited to embrace a new ‘culture’ of food.

For the boy, I ordered the kid’s chicken and rice bowl. The chicken reminded us of McDonalds chicken nuggets, just fresher. These tenders were hot, juicy, and crispy. Perfect dish for a kid that despises sauce as much as my boy does.

Again, we probably won’t be visiting Ming’s at Midtown again. I thought the food was fine, but I’m not interested in just ‘fine’. I’m really hoping to expand my palate and increase my culinary standards. Only looking for great from now on.
