The Ridge at the hill

Located right outside of Fort Sam Houston on the I-35 frontage road, The Ridge at the Hill is a family-owned restaurant serving classic American bar cuisine. I’m a sucker for a good bar and grill! You order at the counter/bar, and the servers deliver the food to your table. My camera was being wonky today and I couldn’t get my settings right. Definitely a user-error, but I will happily revisit this restaurant to retake my photos because the food was delicious. Also, it’s right around the corner!

Starting off strong, we had the fried stuffed jalapenos. Three of the jalapenos are stuffed with cream cheese, while the other three are stuffed with cheddar. They were fried fresh the cheese was nice and melty. Although both were good, Papa and I both agreed that the cream cheese jalapenos were the best. We also ordered the zesty buffalo wings, but unfortunately, I didn’t get a good photo of them. I believe the wings were likely marinated in a spicy blend and seasoned in a buffalo dry rub. They weren’t excessively saucy, and they also weren’t very crispy like traditionally fried wings. I’m guessing the wings were smoked. Zesty buffalo also wasn’t very spicy, which was great, because we all enjoyed them! We will definitely order the wings again next time we visit.

Fried Stuffed Jalapenos

Surprise, surprise— both kids ordered corndogs again. I took the ketchup off of my boy’s plate before he noticed because he despises sauce. They were happy, yes. I’m also happy; Happy they no longer order chicken and fries everywhere we go.

Mini Corndogs

The fish was fried well— it was crispy, juicy, and flaky. It’s served with a side of fries and coleslaw. You’ll also get tartar sauce and ketchup. I thought the tartar sauce was good! Overall, this dish was lacking. Papa said he wouldn’t order this again.

Beer Battered Fish and Chips

When I saw the Black and Bleu burger on the menu, I jumped for joy. I absolutely love bleu cheese! I’ll eat ranch, but I will always choose bleu cheese— especially if it’s made in house! Papa, on the other hand, despises it. So, I attempted to Man vs Food this burger and almost finished half. The burger was cooked well, but it was thick! Alongside the pickles, tomato, and lettuce, the burger was far too large for someone still planning to order dessert. I’d probably skip this dish next time.

Black and Bleu Burger

Dinner isn’t complete if we hadn’t had something sweet! Papa ordered the New York style cheesecake, plain. Cheesecake is his favorite dessert, and he always chooses the classic New York style over anything flashy. According to the menu, it’s made in house. I thought it was light, fresh, creamy, and perfectly sweet. We also ordered the brownie, no pecans. I’m a chocolate girly, through and through, and I believe all desserts should have chocolate! This brownie was warm, creamy, and rich! It almost had a pudding like texture that coated my mouth in a way that was quite heavy. This is the type of indulgence that should be shared!

When in Rome (Texas)! The house margarita was a classic. Tart, tangy, and refreshing. I also ordered a prickly pear margarita. I’d hoped it would be comparable Royal Caribbean’s, Schooner Bar’s, desert pear margarita, but it didn’t satisfy the craving.

Classic Margarita

The Ridge at the Hill is very close to Fort Sam Houston, service was good, the wait was short, the food was tasty, and the prices were mid-range. Will we go back? Absolutely.
