Ida Claire

Papa’s coworkers suggested we visit Ida Claire for brunch. Once he learned about their chicken and waffles, it became our number one priority.

We arrived at Ida Claire around 10:30 on a Saturday morning and were told we would have to wait 45 minutes for a table. This gave us ample time to walk around the Alamo Quarry while we waited. Our table was ready at 11:15 and we were seated immediately.

Our hostess described Ida Claire as a southern-style scratch kitchen, where everything is made to order. She warned us that it would take time to craft our meals and suggested we’d have patience. The kids were given children’s menus with crayons, which is always a hit for keeping them occupied while we wait.

The server upsold us a bottle of prosecco because, according to her, it would be about 4 drinks. It was $40, and I knew Papa would only want one or two mimosas (we don’t drink and drive around here). This meant I would be thoroughly hydrated and filled with bubbles. Because I was absolutely not leaving this brunch without getting my money’s worth!

We began our meal with a last-minute biscuit order orchestrated by yours truly. This was such a great way to start the meal. I’m a southern girl that appreciates the art of a good fluffy, buttery biscuit. Ida’s biscuits were served with sweet honey butter, house jam, and the most deliciously smoky bacon gravy.

I ordered the Banana Bread French Toast. It was exactly what it sounds like: custard soaked, banana bread that gets pan fried. Served with a sweet, strawberry butter and a side of warm bourbon syrup. I’m not a huge syrup girl— just like Paula Dean, I love butter! With that being said, this syrup was good enough to drink! I also ordered a side of bacon, which was far too crispy for my taste. My boy enjoyed it though!

My girl ordered the kids Chicken Biscuit, and my boy ordered the Lemon-Poppyseed Pancakes. Papa ordered the chicken and waffles, and we collectively decided that this was the must order dish. He’s kinda a connoisseur of Chicken & Waffles and will always order it if it’s on the menu.

Overall, we enjoyed the experience. The restaurant was so cute, filled with beautiful decor throughout. Looking forward to trying their espresso martini next time!
