Adair Kitchen

After an almost three-month long drought in San Antonio, we were surprised by an unexpected thunderstorm on Friday. Around 100,000 local residents lost power. The power outage lasted us around 21 hours, which means we lost a ton of food in our fridge. So before we took a family trip to H-E-B, we needed brunch.

Adair Kitchen is a 10 minute drive from the Harry Wurzbach gate of Fort Sam Houston. We easily found a place to park outside of the restaurant. Upon entering the building, we grabbed a menu and waited in line to place our order at the counter. After receiving our table number, we found seating by the bar facing a large window.

Our food came out far quicker than I expected. The service was excellent. Several staff members checked in on us while we ate. Our empty plates were picked up as soon as we finished eating. Everyone working at Adair Kitchen appeared to actually want to be there— the vibes were immaculate.

The biscuit breakfast sandwich was just okay. Biscuit was a bit dry and crumbly. The hash brown casserole is flavorful, well-seasoned, and creamy. I’m a bit bias though, because I’m a huge fan of potatoes, so I can be easily impressed.

I will say that Adair Kitchen’s pancakes are a must-order dish. The pancakes are huge! Served with a sweet, whipped butter and warm maple syrup, these buttermilk pancakes were so warm, fluffy and delicious. An order of three pancakes is plenty to split amongst a small group. A side of bacon (3 slices) will run you $5, but they give you a choice between hard and soft bacon. I appreciated that because me & the girl prefer soft bacon, while the boys like it crispy!

Of course, Papa ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was fried fresh— it was juicy, crispy, and well-seasoned. The waffle was sweet, soft, and fluffy. He says that Adair’s chicken and waffles are equally as good as Ida Claire’s. I think Ida Claire’s chicken and waffles were just a bit more flavorful.

We ordered a pineapple orange juice mimosa pitcher for $24, and it was enough for 4 drinks. The espresso martini was a 10/10. Rich, smooth, nutty, and strong. The bar was quite busy, so I didn’t get a chance to ask exactly which spirits they used. But I will be returning in the future to get the details! Don’t skip the espresso martini!
