Taqueria Cazadores
Cazadores is the restaurant that inspired me to digitally document my experience in San Antonio. Located right outside of the Harry Wurzbach East gate of Fort Sam Houston at 927 Rittiman Rd. My husband discovered this restaurant when we first arrived in Texas back in 2017. This taqueria immediately became the spot we’d bring our friends and family that visited from out of town. At one point, we were so obsessed with Cazadores, we picked up a bunch of tacos for our 14-hour long road trip to Atlanta. Unfortunately for us, cold tacos just didn’t hit the same.
Once we learned we would be moving back to San Antonio, we put this restaurant at the top of our post-PCS checklist. I’m so proud and excited that this delicious restaurant survived a brutal pandemic that knocked so many businesses off the map! They have even added a drive thru y’all! We’ve been in town for a little over 4 weeks, and we’ve already eaten here 4 times. No regrets, because honestly, there aren’t many things in this world better than a fresh tortilla. The carne asada just keeps us coming back for more.
Carne Asada for my girl
A good friend of ours from Okinawa recently moved here with his family, and last night we treated them to our favorite local gem: Taqueria Cazadores.
We usually don’t get an appetizer, but we decided to step out of our comfort zone and work our way through tasting other things on the menu. This time, we ordered the Papas Locas. These fries are covered in a creamy, cheesy, white queso with a generous amount of crumbled bacon. First of all, I’m just so glad they used fresh bacon instead of bacon bits! The fries were steaming hot, but not mushy, the cheese was good enough to drink, and the bacon was crispy. The serving was big enough to share! Great appetizer.

The flour tortillas at Cazadores are the best I’ve ever tasted— they are soft, fluffy, and warm. When it comes to tacos, the kids usually get carne asada, while Papa prefers the al pastor. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. They never skimp on the protein, and the rice is so fluffy and savory.

I always get the Carne Asada Chimichanga. This fried burrito is filled with juicy steak, beans, and covered in the same delicious cheese sauce from the papas locas— served with Mexican rice and refried beans. Don’t forget the red salsa! It’s spicy and flavorful, and the perfect condiment to just about every dish at Cazadores.

What’s Mexican food without a margarita? The House Margarita never disappoints! I did try their Passionfruit Margarita, but it had a syrupy aftertaste that I didn’t enjoy as much. Don’t hold it against me though, I’m a sucker for a classic lime Margarita— on the rocks with salt, never sugar. Tajin works too!

We are a dessert family, of course, so we always finish our meal with something a lil’ sweet. The Tres Leches cake is sweet, moist, and creamy. It’s a delicious treat, but I personally believe all desserts should have chocolate. Otherwise, I treat it as a palate cleanser for something richer. The Chocolate Cake is rich, dense, and big enough to share. It’s not the best cake in the world, it’s heavy and fudgy. I suggest requesting a side of vanilla ice cream to not only stretch this treat out, but to balance the sweetness of the cake.
